Alabastron Pre-dynastic Period, 3rd millennium B.C., alabaster H: 16 cm
Civilization of ancient Egypt lasted for more than 3000 years even only during the dynastic period, and many excellent works of art were created. From the Predynastic period from the 4th to the 3rd millennium BC production of stone vessels flourished. Material used to make a variety of large and small stone vessels was decorative stone like granodiorite, serpentine, red breccia, but alabaster was particularly prized for its soft translucency. This alabastron was used as a scent oil container. The name that derived from the material was established for this type of vessel, and later this shape and name spread wider in the ancient world. Even though vessels of this shape were made by the sand-core glass technique, the name was still alabastron, and it was also used for a particular shape of Greek pottery.
